Matariki Celebration

            IMG_0919.JPG

Matariki is the māori new year. Matariki comes out last week of May and first week of June.  Matariki is seven stars of sisters. Matariki are the hottest stars in the world because they are blue.  And matariki is called different names, Makali’i, Subaru and many more that I don’t know.

When Matariki comes out they have celebrations, they fly manus (kites), they do same songs, the pukaner challenge, they have a hangi and they play knucklebones. When they do all of that they all had done it together, and that means everyone are friends.

In that photo there is me, a manu tukutuku and my buddy maria.  We used toetoe, raupō, a black piece of paper, and wool.  I had did a white side of the weaving, I did the drawing on the black paper.  When we got the toetoe we went out of school and went for a walk to cut the toetoe.  But we did a karakara before we cut it for respect for the toetoe because it leaving its family and so we show tikanga (why we do what we do0 .  Miss Hills (my teacher) got the raupō and the black paper on a on  the weekend, and we got the wool from another teacher.

When I’m working with someone I think I need to work on talking to my buddy so I don’t get angry.  The thing that I'm good when I’m working with a buddy is  talking with my buddy so we know who is going to do.  I know people would make the kites different or make it with different things but it would be hard to weave with harakeke and it will be to hard to weave where that black paper is.
